Sometimes people can get bored with their plain french fries with ketchup. They turn to alternate ways to dress them up!
A favorite of mine is the bacon, cheese, and ranch dressing explosion. You start with a layer of french fries, add some cheese on top of that, sprinkle some crumbled bacon, and dip it in a small (or large) cup of ranch dressing on the side.
Sometimes, people will substitute the bacon & ranch for some chilli, to create the ever delicious chilli cheese fries.
Googling french fry toppings, I also found something interesting.
Poutine is a dish of french fries found in Canada (especially in Quebec), topped with some sort of cheese curd and gravy. Yum. /sarcasm
Apparently, this is something popular in Canada, sold even at fast food resturaunts like McDonald's.
Other countries top their fries with different things too, like tartar sauce in the Netherlands, but that's too far from home for me.
I don't know how I feel about this curd-gravy dish, but I suppose maybe Canadians think the same of our cheddar-bacon-artery-hardening goodness.

That cheese curd and gravy idea is really unappetizing to me. I much prefer just ketchup but the most daring i would go is the cheese and bacon.

I've tried this dish while in Canada. At first I was disgusted by the thought of gravy and cheese curds on french fries. Its not my favorite food but its not completely disgusting. I didn't like how the french fries got soggy from the gravy.

Over our winter break I became addicted to watching Rachel Ray's morning show, and one day she actually did a take on this Canadian specialty. It looked and sounded good...probably because she didnt use the words "cheese curds" at all. Knowing her she probably just put regular cheese on top.

yuummm... waffle fries topped with nacho cheese, bacon and sour cream (aka loaded waffle fries) is probably my favorite appetizer at Friendly's. It combines three of my favorite foods ever (french fries, cheese, and bacon)!!! Cheesy fries (nacho cheese topping only) are good too.... they're my favorite to eat at sporting events!

french fries are good with just gravy on them... except you have to eat them fast or they'll get soggy. I have no idea what cheese curd is, but it doesn't sound very good, especially combined with gravy.

This canadian dish, poutine, is a HUUUGE seller. I live in northern ny and its on every menu. Fries, beef gravy, and mozz plus bacon. Its like a baked potato with the fixens. Not too far from home if you think about it.

Apparently no Canadians have weighed in and as a Canadian and a HUGE Poutine fan I have to say your all nuts! Cheese curds is a yummy white salty cheese with a waxy type texture and with poutine sauce - yes a special gravy just for fries (not beef or chicken - yuck) it is amazing and delicious. I came across this post only becuz i have run out of poutine sauce and was looking something else to fix my plain fries!
